Going Above and Beyond: How Marlin Turned a Complex Safety Request Into a Seamless Solution

When a center-console bay boat builder approached Marlin for the first time, they were in the middle of launching a new model and searching for a digital switching provider they could trust. Their previous supplier had fallen short on customer service, and they needed a partner who would not only deliver reliable technology but also listen, adapt, and support their creative vision.
They found that partner in Marlin.
A Unique Request with High Stakes
Early in the project, the builder presented a very specific request for their table raise/lower system. They needed an enable switch—something Marlin already offered—but with a twist:
The user should hold the enable button for a set amount of time, release it, and then have a limited window to raise or lower the table without holding the enable button simultaneously.
This feature served two important purposes:
• Safety: Prevent accidental activation if someone bumped the switch.
• Comfort: Avoid forcing the user to hold two buttons at once in an awkward position.
It was a thoughtful request—and one the customer already had on their existing system. With another supplier competing for the business, this feature mattered. A lot.
While Marlin receives many custom button requests, this one was new. Larger suppliers often avoid such customizations because approvals take too long, software changes are costly, and the process is cumbersome. But for Marlin, this was exactly the kind of challenge that defines who we are.
Understanding What Was at Stake
If we couldn’t meet the request, the customer might have settled for a less satisfying solution—or worse, questioned whether Marlin could support their long-term needs. They made it clear this feature was important, and we knew delivering it would set the tone for the entire relationship.

Marlin’s Response: Fast, Collaborative, and Hands-On
As soon as the request came in, Marlin’s engineering team jumped into action. Sales, Field Service, Engineering, and the customer worked together to evaluate the requirement and map out the safest, cleanest way to implement it.
While the feature might sound simple from the outside, it required dedicated engineering time to develop and validate the software logic. And because safety was involved, there was no room for shortcuts.
The team moved quickly—so quickly, in fact, that the custom feature was developed, approved, and installed on the prototype boat before it left for the Miami Boat Show. The customer was thrilled.
Going the Extra Mile—Literally
Marlin didn’t just ship parts and hope for the best. Our team spent several days onsite at the customer’s facility, working side-by-side to ensure every detail was dialed in. Face-to-face collaboration during the prototype build, followed by continued check-ins afterward, ensured the system performed exactly as intended.
That level of involvement is rare in this industry—and it’s one of the reasons customers choose Marlin.

A Successful Launch and a Strong Partnership
The final solution performed flawlessly at the boat show, and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. The customer has already placed orders for their next two boats, and the relationship continues to grow.
More importantly, the customer now knows they have a partner who won’t hold back their creativity. If they can imagine it, Marlin will help build it.
What This Project Says About Marlin
This experience highlights what sets Marlin apart:
• We do whatever it takes to put our customers in the best position to succeed.
• We’re flexible in ways larger suppliers simply aren’t.
• We welcome challenges—they push us to innovate and strengthen our partnerships.
As one team member put it, “We WANT to be challenged.”
A Human Moment Behind the Work
For the Marlin team, the most rewarding part wasn’t just delivering the feature—it was the entire journey.
“There’s something about being covered in dust and programming a digital system with the customer that is incredibly rewarding,” they shared.
Building the prototype boat together—not just shipping a box of parts—is what makes Marlin different. And once the system is in place, our quality, responsiveness, and ability to make updates without massive NRE costs keep customers coming back.
