Building a Smarter Boat: Behind the Scenes of a Prototype Install with Marlin Technologies

When a boat builder partners with Marlin Technologies to upgrade their electrical system, it’s more than just an install — it’s a transformation. Recently, our team worked on a prototype boat build that showcased the full power and flexibility of the Marlin Digital System. Here’s how it all came together.

🔍 Step 1: Planning the System

Every great install starts with a great plan. We began by gathering a load list — a breakdown of all the electrical components on the boat — and mapped out where each load was located. This helped us determine the best placement for our digital switchers, which we typically install near major load centers for maximum efficiency.

Next, we identified strategic spots for legend keypads, like the helm and near live wells, to give users intuitive control right where they need it.

💡 Step 2: Presenting the Solution

Once the system layout was dialed in, we prepared a detailed quote and met with the boat builder to walk through our proposed control solution. With their approval, we locked in an install date and got to work prepping modules and harnesses for the big week.

🔧 Step 3: On-Site Installation

Our team arrived on-site with everything needed for the install. We met with the builder’s riggers and engineers to develop a game plan, then got hands-on:

• Measured inrush and running current for each load
• Installed modules and harnesses tailored to the boat model
• Programmed every module
• Tested every load to ensure flawless operation

We also trained the builder’s team on how to configure and install the system themselves — empowering them to take the reins on future builds.

🧩 What We Installed — A Clean Slate

This prototype featured:

• One or more Digital Switchers
• One or more Legend Keypads
• One MFD Gateway

In most cases, we use little or none of the existing electrical control system. If the boat’s setup is analog, we start with a white sheet of paper. It’s a significant change — and yes, it can raise eyebrows at first — but the result is a cleaner, easier-to-use, and more flexible system. Most engineers find it far simpler to understand and diagnose issues compared to legacy setups.

🌊 Built for the Harshest Conditions

Water, corrosion, and vibration are no match for Marlin’s modules. Every component is:

• IP67 sealed
• Potted or conformally coated
• Designed for severe duty and harsh environments

We’ve got over 1,000 boats operating in the Gulf — one of the toughest marine environments — and not a single digital switcher has come back under warranty. That’s durability you can trust.

💬 Feedback from the Field

Boat builders consistently praise the simplicity and flexibility of the Marlin system. In fact, many have gone on to install it on new boats without our help. They know the system so well, they can do it on their own — a true testament to its intuitive design and reliability.

🔁 Continuous Improvement

Every prototype install helps us improve. The Marlin System is the best Digital Switcher System in the market because of lessons learned and improvements made.  We’ve never done a build without adding a new feature or enhancement. Recent additions include:

• Well timers
• RGB light control
• Windlass control

As one team member put it: “We’re getting better every install.”

🧠 Lessons Learned

• Early collaboration with the boat builder makes the install smoother and faster.
• Training and transparency empower builders to take full ownership of the system.
• Every install is a chance to innovate — and we never miss that opportunity.

Final Thoughts

This prototype build wasn’t just about installing hardware — it was about building trust, sharing knowledge, and delivering a smarter, more resilient boat. At Marlin Technologies, we’re proud to help boat builders bring their vision to life, one module at a time.
